Collection: Justin Gustafson

Justin David Gustafson is a Michigan-based oil painter whose work celebrates the quiet beauty of the landscape of Northern Michigan. Painting professionally for over twenty years, Gustafson uses heightened color and rich texture to convey not just the appearance of a place, but the feeling of being there.
Working in layers from the darkest shadows to the lightest highlights, he builds up the image from dark to light, allowing each layer to dry fully before applying the next. This creates an illusion of depth, atmosphere, and luminosity which invites the reviewer to sit in the environment for a while. His process is patient and deliberate, reflecting his belief that meaningful things emerge over time, proportional to the care applied.
Gustafson paints because he loves watching beautiful things come into existence from nothing. Witnessing the emergence of an image that did not previously exist feels like seeing genuine magic. Whether depicting wooded paths, open water, or the enchantment of twilight, his work is grounded in a deep affection for the Northern Michigan landscape.
Through his paintings, he hopes to bring viewers a sense of relaxation paired with the quiet joy of familiarity. A moment of calm, warmth, and presence in a busy world.
